  1. Fitzgerald uses "the heat" imagery to show the tension and how serious the situation is getting. It symbolizes the ending of the relationships and daisys and gatsbys secrets are all coming out. There is a point where Daisy said "we hire five bathrooms and take cold bath" implying that the feel in the room is "hot" or heated and the actual weather is hot so a bath would be the correct term.

    1. I agree that Fitzgerald kept repeating how hot it was to show how serious the situation was getting. He also did it to show that tensions were rising between the characters. This was also the climax of the book because Gatsbys secrets were coming out and he started to show his true self.

  2. I think that Fitzgerald uses "the heat wave" as situational irony that's shows his "temper" rising just like the temperature outside. This is where we get to see another ,scary side of Gatsby that we've never seen before to this extent.Daisy was implying that she finally realizes the show that he had put on from being a wealthy, friendly, successful man to a hot headed ,and in denial man.-Moriah Dickinson

    1. I agree, unusual heat is not a typical weather foreshadow for deaths and dreadful situations, thus, situational irony. Plus, Daisy compares Gatsby as "advertisement of man" hurts Tom's pride and his view toward all women which is some luxury property that not every men could afford.

    2. I agree with you. The heat not only resemble the mood of what was going on it also helped bring out a side of Gatsby we haven't seen yet. And it helped Daisy realize the actual Gatsby not just the Gatsby he puts on to be.

    3. I agree with Moriah, in this part of the book, gatsby was taught to act like a gentlemen, wealthy, mannered man, but Tom pushed his buttons and made his turn into a crazy like person would act like in strong heat, ironic because they say it is extremely hot outside. This takes him into a terrible attitude, frightening man.

    5. I agree , the heat talked about the future what was going on happen and it escalated after tom kept running his mouth

  3. "The advertisement of a man" relates to the perfect man there is. When Daisy refers Gatsby to that in front of her husband, she revealed the truth that she loves Gatsby now and I believe the reason both Gatsby and Tom heard Daisy says this is the author wanted to foreshadow later Gatsby will lose his temple and form a situational irony that he is not "advertisement of a man" like Daisy once thought.

    2. I agree. I think that her comparing him to the advertisement is something of admiration. She feels like he is the man that everyone likes and that everyone would "accept".

    4. I agree that Daisy falls for Gatsby when she thinks he's this advertisement of a man. When she sees him crack and not act like this perfect guy she freaks out and doesn't see him like she used to.

  4. Gatsby can be seen as an advertisement man. He seems to enjoy showing off all that he has to offer, like when he invited Daisy over for tea and he gave her a tour of his mansion. He also dresses very clean and professional looking, just like an advertisement man would for showing off a product in a commercial. he also seems to talk in a calm, but fast paced kind of way and his warm, charming smile can attract anyone.

  6. An advertisement is meant to show a product in the best possible way, and shows all that is good and nothing that is bad. Daisy compares Gatsby to an advertisement to show that she thinks that he is the perfect man. This may also be a motif of appearance vs reality as Gatsby appears perfect, but it is all fake.

  7. Daisy thinks Gatsby is just an advertisement because he is all about marketing himself to her and others. He is always trying to show himself off and accentuate his positive attributes including his wealth. He is always trying to look his best in the eyes of others and markets himself like a commercial or advertisement markets a product.

  8. Daisy compares Gatsby to the advertisement of a man because he has made his life and himself so perfect its unrealistic, much like the life or looks of a man in an advertisement. Daisy says "you look so cool, you always look so cool" meaning that he always looks calm and put together. He has almost no worries, but if he did he didn't show one ounce of them. Gatsby wants to look perfect in the eyes of others even if that means he has to be fake and hidden.

  9. Daisy compares Gatsby to an advertisement because in most advertisement men and women are seen as perfect because they have a certain product. In Gatsby's case that product is his wealth, flashy luxuries, and good company. Daisy is attracted by Gatsby's aura and wants to within his crowd and that's what most people want when they see an advertisement.

  10. Daisy compares Gatsby to an advertisement because most things in advertisements seem to be perfect. so perfect that they seen unrealistic. just like Gatsby his life seems so perfect that it seems fake. He always looks like his life is so perfect just like in advertisements. Gatsby is all about showing him self and all that he has.

    1. I agree, Daisy expresses how much she loved Gatsby and his perfection this way in front of Tom. By showing off what he has, Gatsby tries to show Daisy that she's save with him, too and she should leave Tom to get together with him.

  11. I agree. Gatsby can come off very easy going and nice, but can change very quickly in a matter of seconds. Gatsby shows off what he thinks is the "most American man who's very successful," and does a fantastic job of it. If you were just to glance at Gatsby, you'd realize how materialist he really is and how fake he is.

  15. An advertisement of a man shows off some sort of product. Gatsby is the advertisement of West Egg. Gatsby is like an advertisement of a man by he is always in the news, and he is very well known in West Egg. He is always throwing these parties and showing that new money of West Egg.

  16. Daisy thinks of Gatsby as an advertisement of the man since in her eyes he was what a man should be. He was said to be "Handsome to look at and a perfect gentleman"(page 77). His looks and the way he acts would be perfect to 'sell' a good image of men to the female audience.

  17. When Daisy calls Gatsby a advertisement of a man I think she meant that in the ways of him being friendly with people and moving along with the times .And at the same time being mysterious in how he gets his money and what people think of him.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Daisy calls him an advertisement of a man because Gatsby appears as though he is the perfect man through his lifestyle, his clothes, his money, and his good looks. But what advertisements don't show you is what happens when the cameras aren't running. Daisy quickly finds out that Gatsby is a way different man than the one she had come to "love".

  20. Gatsby displays his wealth on his exterior, as an advertisement makes a product visually appealing. Gatsby is mysterious and relatively unknown personally, there are few who actually get the chance to speak to him. Daisy refers to him as an advertisement man due to the fact that he flexes his money and power, but cannot deliver what she needs from a partner.

  23. Daisy compared Gatsby to an advertisement of a man, because he seems cool, collected, inviting, and perfect. It's ironic because ads are misleading, often retouched, and minipulate the public opinion. Gatsby is a man who built his own persona, he only puts out what he wants people to see. Gatsby is like an advertisement because his outward appearance may seem perfect, but it's anything but that. He has opened up to very few people, even then they truly don't know who he is. Only Nick really knew some about Gatsby

  24. Daisy kept saying Gastby looked so cool. Now mind you it was the hottest day of summer and she wanted to be cool. She advertised him looking cool to everyone because that's what she wanted to be.

  25. Gatsby is an adverstisment because he looked so cool and it was very hot and she wanted to be cool. But the heat got the best of him when he lost his temper and started yelling and getting violent with Tom. Then Tom said aren't you an Oxford man then Gatsby said he lost his cool for a second.

  26. Dasiy is comparing him to an advertisement of a man because even in the unbearable heat he seems cool. She is also at this point trying to covertly basically say he looks good but trying to keep it friendly from looks. Even though everyon but Tom know what she means.

  27. Daisy compares Gatsby to an advertisement because he is very calm and cool even on the hottest day. Normally, advertisements are very misleading and manipulated. I believe that is why fitzgerald included that part into the book. Because everything about Gatsby is fake and misleading.

  35. An advertisement is there to promote and show a product. Fitzgerald says Gatsby is "Handsome to look at and a perfect gentleman," which in Daisy's eyes is what she looks for in a guy. It is showing us hat Gatsby is advertising everything Daisy wants in a guy.

  36. "The advertisement of a man" relates as perfect that can be. When Daisy refers Gatsby to that in front of her Tom, she revealed the truth that she is still in love Gatsby even now and I believe the reason both Gatsby and Tom heard Daisy says this is the author wanted to foreshadow later Gatsby will lose it at Tom and form a situation that he is not "advertisement of a man" that Daisy thought he was.
