  1. Gatsby coming from nothing, a small boy from North Dakota lived in a little shack and worked on a farm, he worked his way up and achieved the American Dream. His journey to fame and success all started out when his family died. All the members in his family died and he was the only one left. So he decided he didn't want to be a poor farmer from North Dakota his whole life, so he took the brave step and he adventured off alone. Starting out finding the ship little did he know that was the start of his success fortune and fame. This all came to reality when he decided to want to better himself and have a better future for himself and he made is dream only one dream based off daisy

    1. Interesting information, but, Gatsby moved away not because his family passed away. In fact, he couldn't afford his tuition for college or work as a junior ("dismayed at its ferocious indifference to the drums of his destiny"), therefore, he gave up everything he had after recruited by Dan Cody, a drunk millionaire. In chapter 6, the one thing he didn't realize in my opinion is that Daisy wants his love and Tom's family not the opposite.

    2. I agree with Sheldon, because although Gatsby has all of the wealth, he is not the type of person that she wants. Daisy wanted to keep her lifestyle which was always old money, and Gatsby wasn't that and he never could be that.

    3. I agree with you Ja'Lyn, because Gatsby really did live what he thought was the "American Dream." He started off with nothing and then became something big. I also agree with Sheldon though, he couldn't afford to start his career. But in the end he was very successful.

    7. I agree with you, Gatsby leaves his family in pursuit of wealth. Although Daisy was his final puzzle piece, he achieved his main goal.

    8. I agree with you llangelman. The money was one of his goals but his main goal was to get Daisy. So once he got Daisy he would accomplished his American Dream. But Daisy could not make up her mind between Gatsby or Tom. Butt when Gatsby lost his cool in the town and freaked out on Tom she realized how much she didn't know about Gatsby. Going back to the circle conversation that we had in class how their mansions matched their personalities. Gatsby's mansion what kind of secluded and always closed off and Tom's mansion was always open and all the windows are open and the yard was the entrance.

    9. I agree with Sheldon. He doesn't see that Daisy only wants him for their love. He believes that with his flashy parties that he will get the girl of his dream, but in reality, she wants to have a family with Tom.

  2. I agree, Gatsby realized he wanted to be the total opposite of his unsuccessful family. He experienced struggle and knew that in order to get Daisy he would have to step up his game and become wealthy in order to have a chance with her. He was so determined with his love parties ,entertainment and his mansion in hopes that Daisy would someday wander in and see how successful and wealthy he is .Even with the list that we find out about after in the last chapter , his goal when he was being "reborn" due to the help from Dan Cody; was to be nicer to his family.- Moriah Dickinson

    1. I agree with you Gatsby felt that he was a outcast. And he thought to get Daisy he needed to step up and change some how so that he could empress her to get her.

  3. Gatsby didn't realize that Daisy wouldn't be able to confront Tom face to face and gives him the "I loved no one else, but Gatsby" he wanted. He wanted to make up all those years that he missed but couldn't see that Daisy doesn't even have faith in him. Gatsby's act reveals the ambition to abandon the lower-class identity he had, however, that is the exact reason when the Tom reveaed him true identity during the showdown for Daisy he easily lost his temple.

    2. "He wanted nothing less of Daisy than that she should go to Tom and say: “I never loved you.” After she had obliterated four years with that sentence they could decide upon the more practical measures to be taken. One of them was that, after she was free, they were to go back to Louisville and be married from her house — just as if it were five years ago."

    3. I agree that Gatsby didn't realize that Daisy wouldn't be able to say that she never loved Tom. He thought that they had always been in love and that they would be together. In reality though Daisy just wanted Gatsby for his money and Gatsby wanted her to fulfill his American Dream. Gatsby already had the wealth and he thought the only thing he was missing was Daisy. Since she was the perfect trophy wife.

    4. Well at this point it isn't about daisy leaving tom but rather mr. and Mrs. Sloan inviting Gatsby over for dinner. Gatsby doesn't realize that the invitation was insincere due to the fact that Gatsby doesn't have the social knowledge that comes with the old money.

    5. I completely agree with you Sheldon. Gatsby just wanted the affirmation of being loved by Daisy because he knew that Daisy never loved Tom. What Gatsby sees in Daisy is success, the success story he has always wanted. That's why he always looked at the green light at the end of the Daisy's dock. That light symbolized the want for success Gatsby had primarily through Daisy.

  4. There are many reasons that Gatsby has become known as "New Money".
He lives on West Egg, which is considered the place where new, young rich people live compared to the traditional, old money folk of West Egg. He also shares many different views on certain subjects such as women, classes and jobs when compared to other men such as Tom Buchanan. This makes Gatsby seem like a coming to age man, rather than traditional POV at the time, which may also reflect on why he is called "New Money"

    1. I agree that this explains part of how Gatsby is new money, but I think it goes even further into how he is new to the way a rich person lives. He is still trying to figure out how to act or speak or hide certain things. He hasn't really caught on to some of the sarcasm or gestures people use because of the fact that he is new and rich. I think with each lie he tells he digs a hole for himself deeper and deeper.

    2. I agree with this, and I also think Gatsby is literally new money because he is not from the area. This also relates to why he doesn't understand what people may actually mean, like that the woman didn't actually want him to come. She just said he's welcome to come to be polite, but Gatsby was meant to say no. All he knew to start off with is that Daisy lives near, he can have a nice house there, and it's a good spot for business.

  6. Gatsby believes that Daisy is going to tell Tom about their rekindled love at his party, however that was never in Daisy's plan. Since Gatsby was raised poor and is considered "new money" Daisy would never leave Tom who symbolizes power and comfort for someone who could lose everything and not have any old money to fall back on. Whenever the four went into town Daisy says to Gatsby, "Oh, you want too much," which shows that she's not willing to give anything up for Jay and he doesn't realize what that comment symbolizes. I believe that if Gatsby came from old money Daisy might have actually been sincere about her love for him but because of where he came from Daisy would never completely give herself to only him.

  7. Gatsby has a warped sense of values. He covets money, possession and status. But in reality he cannot buy love so his money is worthless. Wealth cannot replace all the empty holes in peoples lives.

Gatsby is considered new money he grew up poor but he wanted to make a name for himself and he did, he wasn't okay with the way he was living before. "I suppose he'd had the name ready for a long time, even then. His parents were shiftless and unsuccessful farm people – his imagination had never really accepted them as his parents at all." He isn't realizing that Tom doesn't like him because he is new money and tom is getting suspicious about his money like where he might have got the money.

  9. Gatsby thinks Daisy is going to show tom as well as ti=ell him she Loves Gatsby and they are going to be together. He thinks this because she "Having a marvellous" time.pg. 104 Gatsby is considered "new money because he does not know better but to spend tons of money on these party every time, He comes from a poor poor family and now he is rich.

  10. Gatsby is considered new money mainly for the fact that he didnt inherit a fortune passed along by many generations. He sought after this money, built his way up, and achieved what he wanted. Some of this wasnt "legal" or legitamite but he acquired it within a few short years.

    1. i agree, Gatsby got his money even if it wasn't in the right way to get what he wanted he was considered poor when he was younger but did not want to seem to have a low life which is why he had parties.

  11. Gatsby doesn't realize Daisy isn't fully committed to him. Daisy is in love with Gatsby's lifestyle not necessarily Gatsby himself as the reason she doesn't tell Tom she loves Gatsby. She reserves her feelings about Gatsby because she is married and secure with Tom and she thinks if Tom can have an affair she can too.

  12. Gatsby took after a man named Dan Cook, and aspired to inherit his wealth. He erased his past and modeled himself after this man. Gatsby wished to become rich and live luxuriously.

Gatsby doesnt realize that no matter what he does, or how hard he tries, that in the end Daisy would never give up her life style. Looking from the outside, Gatbsy and Daisy share, so to speak, "similar" lifestyles; but they drastically differ. Gatsby is new money, he wasn't born rich, he lived on a barren farm land. He built a life from Dan Cody, which started his wealth. Daisy was born rich, she grew up rich, her life style is privledged and high society. They could never be together. Daisy was too comfortable with her lifestyle. In a way, I think that Daisy knows she would never be with Gatbsy, just as Tom would always stay with Daisy. It was all about class and prestige.

  14. Gatsby doesn't realize that in him covering for daisy he is risking his own life and fame and fortune. The fact that Gatsby was new money set him up for his fate but he wanted the money for Daisy.

  15. Gatsby Dosent realize that daisy is reliving that her and Gatsby might not work out. Because of his persistent at daisy to tell Tom how "she truly feels". Being new money means that he has made the money from not all legal means and that he is more flashy that people with old money.

  23. From this exerpt gatsby was already feeling unstopable. His dreams would be relised he had them in his grasp, he just didnt acount for one thing. The fact that daisy was torn not devoted to gastby, she wouldnt make his plan a realality it would fade to nothingness
