  1. The green light shows that Gatsby knows it is their house because he stares every night across the water at their house hoping one day he will talk to dasiy. "Possibly it had occurred to him that the colossal significance of that light had now vanished forever."

    1. I agree, The green light almost gives him hope but then it really doesn't happen and the end it just disappears forever .

    2. I also agree that the green light represents hope. It is situated at the end of Daisy's dock; which shows of his hope for their future together. In the first chapter Gatsby is reaching for it like its the guiding light for reaching his goals.

    3. I completely agree with you, Colton. The reason why Gatsby looked at that light is because he knew that the green light was Daisy, and he always had a thing for Daisy, but now that Daisy was there with him, that light would never mean the same thing as it did before.

    4. I somewhat agree, but I think that the green light prior to that night represented the unattainable thing that was daisy, and now it represents the connection to daisy that was created that day.

    5. I agree with you as well. The green light is an old representation of Gatsby's fantasy of meeting Daisy. Since he has now finally met with her again it can now be reality and the fantasy is no longer needed. The green light is nothing to Gatsby now.

    6. I agree with Colton. I think Gatsby looked at the light the way he did was becausethe green like represented daisy and that one day they might be together. He always fantasized about Daisy. Now that Gatsby has Daisy The green like is just there it has no purpose anymore because he now has the thing that he looked at the green light hoping for.

    7. I agree that the green light gives Gatsby hope that he will see Daisy again sometime and to help him live each day knowing that he'll see her soon.

  2. I agree. Especially since the light symbolizes his vitality at the thought of talking to and loving Daisy. Which is then diminished when he gave her a larger than life view.

  3. On page 92, Gatsby mentions "You always have the green light that burns all night at the end of your dock." Gatsby is using the green light as a symbol of closeness. He feels very close to Daisy even though they might not be together. The green light was just a way to represent that Daisy was there and that he constantly thought about her.

    1. I agree. Gatsby was very close to Daisy, and like you said, the green light is representing the closeness between them.

  4. In the beginning of the story, the green light is considered a beacon of hope, as it points to East Egg, where Daisy resided. Gatsby throws many parties in order to draw Daisy's attention, as she was his lover, his symbol of hope. When Daisy is in Gatsby's presence at the end of chapter 5, the light was no longer a symbol of hope but reality.

  5. The green light seems to represents Gatsby's hope that one day they will meet again. This is obvious considering that the "Green Light" is where Tom and Daisy's house is. But by then end of the chapter the light goes from hope to reality after Daisy visits Gatsby and Nick.

  6. Initially the green light represents a mysterious place that was far off to the East Egg. It was somewhat a light at the end of the tunnel or unattainable. Then at the end
of chapter 5, the light's meaning changed to reality. Daisy is now back in Gatsby's life, so the light no longer means a distant hope, but something real to him now. Dannie McNeill

    1. I don't think the light represents a mysterious place. Yes it does represent the light at the end of the tunnel because all he wants is daisy. He knew she lived there.

  9. The green light in the first 5 chapters was a major symbol to Gatsby. He knew that that was Daisy's house and it was a sense of so close yet so far because he knew now that Daisy was out of reach to him. However when Daisy visited him at his house and they looked out towards the bay where he had usually looked for the glow he realized, "the great distance that had separated him from Daisy it had seemed very near to her," meaning the green light no longer felt like it was separating them from one another instead bringing them closer.

    1. I agree once Daisy and Jay were united the symbolism of the green light seemed to lose its gravity and was no longer a symbol at all!
