  1. Yellow is a repeating color in this chapter and throughout the book. Yellow is symbolic of luxury, wealth, and the high life. Food is described as " turkeys bewitched to a dark gold" and the band plays music that is "yellow cocktail music".

    1. I agree, yellow is a symbol of money. But, yellow is also the color of spectacles that eyes of Doctor T. J. Eckleburg are looking through. I believe yellow is symbolizing the filter that applied to every bit of luxury described in the book which can explain how unrealistic those parties are.

  2. Education is one of the symbols that was discussed many times throughout the first 3 chapters. It is related to the classes that characters represent. For example, from "I graduated from New Haven in 1915, just a quarter of a century after my father", we can conclude that Nick received top-tier education and kept the connections that he made which are how he got into the situations that only the wealthiest people would be welcome.

    1. I agree with education. Most the characters have gone to some fancy college. I think it's done to show that these people are relatively smart but still make mistakes, and are nervous

    2. Yes, agreed. Education played a main role in wealth and for the future. Many characters have had an educational experience, leaving them wealthy today.

    3. I agree that the characters referenced the colleges they attended to represent their social status and upper social class. In this era, it was all about how much money you had and your social class to get recognition and respect from your peers. Everyone wanted to keep up with the "Jones" and maybe even do better than the "Jones".

    4. I agree that the characters referenced their colleges that they attended. They almost use that as like a status showing how well educated they are.

    5. I agree that Eduxation seems to be a common symbol used throughout chapters 1-3. It seems that depending on the college you go to, that is the class of people you are grouped in, middle class, high rich class, or low poor class. Evidence seems to be that Tom was successful at New Haven college, and is now rich living in East Egg.

    6. I agree that education is a motif but I also believe that education was a way to show your status. Education is talked about in a sense to show superiority as in I have more/ better schooling therefore I am a superior person to you.

  3. I think that yellow is a huge color that is used throughout this chapter. Everything is about money and other peoples wealth. Also everything that is played and said in this chapter is nothing but yellow so money and wealth.

    1. I agree that yellow is a color that is constantly used to represent the glory of money and riches that Gatsby has obtained . Green which represents the money in the green light that give Gatsby a sense of connection with Daisy is very prominent in this chapter and within the whole novel. This whole novel is basically about money and how even if you have all the money in the world you can still not be happy and content with what you have if you don't have the one that you love .

    2. I agree that yellow represents being wealthy and that it is important to the characters in the book. Wealth plays a major role in the book. I also believe that is the main cause of all the dishonesty in the book.

    3. I agree that yellow represents wealth, but it could also mean the lightheartedness of what the 1920's was. People were becoming their own, women acted more freely and wildly. Also wealth is what makes the people greedy, self centered, and dishonest.

  4. Yellow also means light, as in the sun. On page 40, it says,"The lights grow brighter as the earth lurches away from the sun, and now the orchestra is playing yellow cocktail music, and the opera of voices pitches a key higher." This quote is basically saying that as the party get started, the beauty of the sun slowly diminishes. It is swallowed up in the crowd of people.

    1. I agree with yellow meaning light. I also think it connects with happiness too, and the interaction between people. Since the quote says as the sun sets as the night grows, but it says the light becomes brighter. So I believe that yellow represents bonding/communication in your text evidence, along with light.

  5. Yellow is a huge part of the book so far. Yellow represents wealth or happiness or light. "The lights grow brighter as the earth lurches away from the sun, and now the orchestra is playing yellow cocktail music". This really helps to show that the yellow is calm and peaceful which makes the people happy.

    1. I agree, the color yellow is a peaceful color. While some may point towards it being more about wealth, I believe the symbolism of the color yellow in the novel is the representation of the cheery mood of the party-goers. Yellow creates a mood of happiness.

  6. In the novel, "The Great Gatsby", I believe the green light that is being featured throughout the book represents the wealthy and overall greed of 1920's. People during that era displayed love for only money and it is reoffends several times in the book.

  7. I believe it's not acceptable to pose as someone you're not. Take Daisy for instance, she married Tom just for his money and name. She didn't really love him. This, in the end, both hurts Tom and Daisy.

  8. The eyes of Dr. TJ Eckelburg had a significant meaning as a symbol in the novel. The eyes were viewed as all knowing and judgmental. With that being said the eyes also represent the corruptness of the 1920's.They show that the people of the time period were very sinful yet aware of their wrongdoing. Throughout the entire novel, Fitzgerald is trying to get his point across that there was more to the 1920's than portrayed. With the eyes Fitzgerald does so.

    1. I agree the eyes of Eckelburg are a huge symbol to the novel. They symbolized that they are always watching and see everything not just things in the valley of ashes but also the entire CITY!

  9. I think money is symbolic in the story because with out it you have nothing. You have nothing nice which means most women aren't gonna be interested in you which means you have no wife and no kids which means you can't carry on your family's name. And money also gets you pretty much anything you want.

  11. I agree with everyone ones comments about the yellow symbolizing wealth. Throughout the novel and the 1920's we see that wealth is a big part of this time period...everything revolved around money. The yellow light causes a lot of problems throughout the novel. One of the main problems is pretending be someone you are not "to get the girl" or get whatever your motive is.
