Based on Tom’s remarks about Jordan Baker, what can the reader infer about his views on women? Include text evidence. All responses should be 3-5 sentences.

  1. In Tom's mind, women are just luxury objects that are owned by men and should always be grateful for the wealth they provide. However, Jordan Baker is different from the "girls" Tom has control over like Daisy or Myrtle. In chapter 1, "How you ever get anything done is beyond me" gives the feeling that he is joking about how Jordan can be so independent and wealthy. Tom didn't have much respect towards Jordan just like he didn't have much respect towards all women he knows.

    4. I agree that Tom's comments on Jordan show that he isn't much of a respectable man, especially towards women. He views himself along with the male population as superior. Tom thinks that women are just little trophies who owe men something, and that they should be grateful for men

  3. Jordan Baker is different from the other girls like daisy and myrtle because she isnt "owned" by tom and she is a wealthy and independent woman&& Tom believes that since he has shelter and money that the women like daisy and myrtle should be pleased with what they.

  4. Tom dominates the conversation at dinner. And Tom's phone call from his lover in New York shows that he's not respect for women's feelings. This woman, whose name is Jordan Baker, is a very close friend to Daisy makes her living as a professional golfer. She has a frigid, boyish beauty and affects an air of extreme. Jordan is extremely different than the other girls in this novel because she carries herself way differently. She's more of a laid-back partygoer than a party girl . By hitting Myrtle Tom shows that he has little to no respect for women .

    2. I agree, an I also think that Tom is mad that he can't control a woman like Jordan Baker and he takes out his frustrations on Myrtle.

    3. Tom does not have a high level of respect for women. He wants to control and dominate women and feels he is superior. Just the fact that Tom thought it was ok to have extra marital relations shows he does not respect women or relationships.

    4. I completely agree with your statement Tom is just looking for attention and wants everyone to know he is wealthy.

  5. I agree, Tom has non respect for women's feelings. He is having an affair with a lady, instead of just staying hoe and taking care of his family

  7. I think Tom has no value for women opinion. Tom thinks that women are just here to serve his needs. Tom is having an affair while being married to another woman this shows that he also doesn't value commitment to women

    1. Agreed, Tom sees no value in women. Using them to his advantage. Also being unfaithful to his wife proves these points.

    2. I agree, but I also believe that it frustrates tom that this woman is independent, and able to resist him and his money.

  8. Based on Toms remarks, us as readers now know that he views women as an object. He will use one for love and one for pleasure. Myrtle is obviously for pleasure. And he will go home to Daisy for love. Thats why he doesnt ever divorce her. In some weird screwed up way he does care for her. But he needs Myrtle to please him.

  9. Tom has no respect for women or their feelings. First Tom is having an affair with a women in New York and answers while at dinner with his wife. Then Jordan tells Tom about how romantic the stables are and Tom said, "If it's light enough after dinner, I want to take you down to the stables." This also happened at dinner with his wife right there; which shows that he doesn't care how she feels.

    1. I agree you can see how the way he treats his own wife so just imagine how he treats other women AND he raised his hand at Myrtle!

  10. Tom does not care about woman at all . He just likes to take advantage of them and act like he is in love with him when its just about them making him feel like he is only important . Tom was married to a woman and then goes out with another this shows he is just full of himself and wants to noticed .

    1. I agree with you fully. Like Daisy married Tom for his money, Tom only wants a girl for her looks or her fame. He wants to get his name around the town to seem famous like the girls. He has no respect for women.

    2. I totally agree Tom only wants daisy for him to look good and make him seem like he is living the life and only wants her to show her off.

  11. The reason as to why Tom doesn't like Jordan Baker is because he doesn't care for women at all. For example, on page 15, Tom was more interested in the phone call than in Daisy and Jordan Baker. The reason why is because women back then didn't really care for the love relationship, they just cared for the money status.

  12. Based on Tom's overall demeanor towards women, I believe that he sees them as trophies. He sees earning them as thing every man needs to do once, and then afterwards they are set on shelves and put on display. That is why he blatantly interrupts them like when Daisy said "Well, you ought to see her. She's--" then "Tom Buchanan, who had been hovering restlessly about the room" decided to butt in and talk to Nick instead(10). This shows how his view towards women is that they are here to earn and do not need to be treated humanely afterwards.

  13. I think that Tom Views women as more of objects rather then actual human beings. He controls the Women such a daisy and thinks that they should praise him for all that he provides for them. "He took down his drink as if it were a drop in the bottom of a glass.""How you ever get anything done is beyond me." Tom is basically saying that women cannot do anything. The problem with Jordan Baker is that she is not like other women she is very independent and Tom can't control her like he does most women which makes him not like her. -Mackenzie Murphy

    1. I agree with you on that. When Tom says "How you ever get anything done is beyond me" he is basically implying that women are stupid. I also agree that Jordan is very independent and that bothers Tom because to him, independent women are a bad sign.

  14. "How you ever get anything done is beyond me." This is showing that Tom really has zero respect for woman and how they can be equal. Many woman in the 20's depended on a man for money and to define if they were wealthy or not. Jordan Baker however, is a very independent individual. She enjoys being herself and doesn't seem to be hung up on a man. She's essentially a symbol for women's rights and how women can be successful independent individuals.

  15. Tom has to respect for women and doesn't like how Jordan is independent and does it on her own. "How you ever get anything done is beyond me" Shows that he has to be controlling them and can't stand that she can do it all by herself. Jordan is nothing like how myrtle and daisy are she can work for it without tom

  16. Tom is very disrespectful towards women, he believes them to be a sort of luxury and that they can be bought over by wealth. When he states "How you get anything done is beyond me", he openly describes how he views Ms. Baker, and how he believes she is worthless. Tom seems to lack care for women, and treat them as if they are inferior.

  17. Tom represents what many men thought of women during pre and early women rights years. He seems to view women more as objects or lower life forms, rather than actual people with feelings or opinions. This is obvious in Chapter 1 when Jordan Baker tells Nick that Tom is having an affair with another women while being married to Daisy, and doesn't seem to feel guilty about it, or care about what Daisy thinks or feels about it

  18. Tom thinks that women are just luxury items to show off and are already expected to be there if you have money and he shows no respect for them unlike Jordan who puts women higher in his list.

  19. I agree with you Kaleb he does nit treat them right.

  20. Tom disrespects woman.. "on the evening I drove over there to have dinner with the Tom Buchanans. Daisy was my second cousin once removed, and I'd known Tom in college."

NOTICE: nick says tom buchanans not th buchanans, so the love don't exist anymore..

  22. I agree with the observation that Tom sees women as a luxury. He uses Daisy as a symbol of power and wealth. his bad comments towards Jordan show his hateful personality towards the people around him.
