  1. I think that it isn't acceptable to pretend to be something or someone your not. For Example, Daisy is pretending to love tom because of his money so she has nice things and she knows about the affair but she is okay with it because of the wealth tom has. She also had a thing for Gatsby but since he didn't have alot of money at the end she left him because of lack of wealth and she really did like Gatsby and since he was wealth now she wants to go back to him.

    1. I agree, they are both unhappy in the relationship. Toms cheating and daisy is just in it for the money which are two of the worst things that can be found in a relationship.

    2. This is true it is not a stable relationship. They both got into the relationship for the wrong reasons now are doing the wrong things in them, like Tom being unfaithful.

    4. I completely with you Ja'Lyn. It isn't acceptable because if someone has an interest in you, and you're a fake, they might turn that against you. And what's wrong with honesty, nothing. If you are honest, then the chances of a person liking you is a whole lot higher. Most people look at the personality of a person that they like, not for being a fake.

    5. I agree. I believe Daisy knows exactly what she wants, she's just scared. Daisy isn't the smartest person for allowing Tom to hurt her like that, but money was want everyone wanted in the 20's so it's almost like a social norm. Daisy should've stayed with Gatsby long ago though, and she's just now realizing what she let go of.

    7. I also agree, Daisy undoubtely wishes for more out of a partner. We also learn she is fully aware of Tom's mistress, and hopes her daughter grows up to avoid her mistakes. Daisy knows she deserves better, however she isn't strong enough to admit so.

    8. I totally agree they are both unhappy and they are just using each other which isn't a happy marriage or relationship.

    9. I agree 100% No one should be with someone for what they own. Daisy only sees wealth and that's pretty much it for her.

  2. I think it isn't acceptable for some to pretend to be something or someone they aren't, for example Gatsby pretends to be this really confident rich guy and throws all these parties. But he isnt throwing all these parties for the guests he's doing it in the hope of luring daisy to his house to reunite with her.

    1. I totally agree, from the beginning of the novel in chapter 1 in and multiple chapters; it shows that Gatsby is alone and longs for company. Later in the last couple of chapters we find out that he was throwing the parties just to get attention from Daisy. All of the stories that he told in order for people to look up to him or glorify him for his success made him feel down about himself and less as a person . Deep down inside he's actually hurting and just wants to be accepted and fit in to this culture that demands for success, especially money . This is why Gatsby constantly surrounds himself around live parties and drinks to see how people can be happy but he longs to be like them but he can never feel content because he's living a lie .

    2. I agree, I think putting on a show for other people completely drains the energy of that person as they cannot ever be their true self and it all just eats them up inside. The person should be able to express real emotion real feelings so that things won't eat up at them and make them crazy like Gatsby.

    3. Yes, I thinks its wrong to put on a mask. The truth will eventually come out no matter what. It is a waste of time and energy to pretend to be someone else.

    4. I also believe that it is not okay to pretend to be something your not. Gatsby should have just told the truth instead of trying to lure Daisy to a party. If Gatsby just asked for Nick to invite Daisy to tea he probably would've done it, and then he wouldn't have had to throw all the parties

    5. I disagree because if you are to busy trying to please and impress others with materials or your worth then you will lose part of yourself. You should only care about your own self-worth.

    6. I completely agree as you reach further into the novel it seems as though Gatsby has told these lies so many times that he is starting to believe them himself.

  3. Therefore, I think it is not acceptable to try to put on the show and act like you're someone that you're not because at the end of the day you're not happy content with yourself .

  4. I agree ,I think that if you are not acting like the person you are and you think you are going to get away with it sooner or later people will find out.

  5. Tom is acting like someone he is not . He acts like he is a loyal guy and cares for his wife but then goes off and cheats on her with another woman. This shows that tom is hiding the true person he really is but he knows that everyone is going to find out at some point

  6. It is not acceptable to pretend to be someone you are not. For example, George Wilson pretended to be a well of man to earn the love of a beautifully described woman named Myrtle. Later it is revealed that "he borrowed somebody's best suit to get married", revealing to Myrtle the true character of the man she is stuck with(39). So in the end George ended up with a bad marriage and is still just a bum who works at a gas station.

  7. I think it is unacceptable for someone to portray someone they are not. They should be honest about who they are to the people they talk to and if those people don't accept you for your wrongs then they aren't real friends. So for Gatsby to lie about his life is unacceptable.

  8. It is not acceptable to pretend to be something you're not, however it was a different time back then when it was a social norm. The quoat "here's another thing I always carry. A souvenir from the Oxford days." Gatsby was clearly trying to plant an image of who he is, but it may not be true.

  9. I think it is totally unacceptable to pretend to me someone there not. Throughout the 1920's it is very common to pretend to be someone there not. For instance with Gatsby he plays up his life and makes it seem his life is so grand. He talks about "I lived like a young rajah in all the capitals of Europe." He then goes on to talk about how he went to Oxford and that he lived in the "Middle West" which in his case is San Francisco. The things that Gatsby says aren't really adding up. Gatsby tries to get people to think that he's living this marvelous life when in reality that might not be the case.

    1. I totally agree, when you pile lies on top of lies they will end up catching up with you at some point, so there is no reason to lie in the beginning.

  10. It is not okay to pretend to be something you are not to get ahead in life. This then creates a false view on you as a person and even though you may be making the "dough" you will never be truly happy with yourself. This will stem from the inability to act like yourself and yhusly you will be unhappy.

  11. In "The Great Gatsby" Tom Buchanan tries extremely hard to try and impress people with his wealth and his overwhelming confidence in his own abilities. Tom wasn't much conceited before he was introduced into the life of fast spending and extravagant parties. It isn't right to act a certain way to please those around you or "fit in with the crowd".

  12. No it is not acceptable to be something your not because you don't want to be around fake people.

  13. I don't believe it is okay to pretend to be something else. It will never truly gain others trust and it will not make you happy. A great example of this is Daisy. She has more money than she knows what to do with but is not content. She is extremely judgmental towards herself and her marriage. Daisy explains to Nick" I think the best thing a girl can be in this world is a beautiful fool." In the quote I believe Daisy is referring to herself.

  14. Concealing your true self, is the worst thing you can do to not only you, but others. Other people's perception of you shouldn't matter as much as how you feel about yourself. For example, Gatsby has obviously been somewhat untruthful about him and his past; in order to be viewed differently. He's new money and he wants to be viewed as successful and mysterious and inviting. Whereas Gatsby's true motives are revealed later.

  15. I agree that it's wrong to be someone your not in order to better yourself. Like Gatsby is in order to impress Daisy and trying to win her over or how Daisy is only staying with Tom for her daughter.

  16. No it's not acceptable to be someone you are not its better to just be who you are and live life that way. For example Daisy she only likes Tom for his money and she doesn't care that he is disrespectful to her. Looking to Gatsby, Daisy had a thing for Gatsby but didn't want him because he did not have money but now that he does Daisy wants Gatsby back.

  18. It is not acceptable for some to pretend to be someone or something that they are not. For example Daisy pretends to love Tom when really she doesn't. She is just married to him for the money.

  22. I agree with Meyer Wolfsheim because he is old money and he knows what he has done to get his riches but he is still a gentlemen and rather classy at the same time. He is a really respectable man and he is very RICH, but it doesn't change his morales

  25. It is not acceptable for someone the pretend to be something they are not. When daisy said "the best thing for a girl to do is be a beautiful fool" she is a beautiful fool herself. By being one she has financial stability and security. And those are the only things she seems to care about.
